I, like many people, have a bucket list. Though as a traveler it may seem strange that my list doesn’t really include places to visit. But rather activities to do or things to experience. One thing that was on my list was to swim with dolphins. And during my recent trip to Dubai, I was able to cross it off!
I had learned that dolphin swims were available at the Atlantis Hotel’s Dolphin Bay. I was really excited about the chance to do one. That is, of course, until I saw the price tag. It was outrageously expensive! And after just completed a Master’s degree, money was not something that I had a lot of. This worried me quite a bit, but I was far more worried about one other thing… regret.
For me, my motivation to travel and experience things is brought on by the fear of regretting not doing it. More so than the benefits that can be obtained from it. I was definitely concerned about the cost of swimming with dolphins. But then I told myself that if I were to leave Dubai without doing it then I would deeply regret it. So I threw down and booked a time slot.
At Dolphin Bay, I chose to do their ‘Dolphin Adventure’ Swim. Which meant that I could be in deeper water and be able to do more with the dolphins. They had other options to stay just in shallow water, but you’re limited as to what you’re able to do there. After checking in at the reception lobby, myself and everyone else that had booked a swim was led to a separate building. There we were issues wet suits and asked to remove any jewelry and store them in a locker. This was to ensure the safety of the dolphins.
We were then led to a small lecture room for a quick briefing of what we could expect. After the briefing was finished we were broken up into small groups. Myself and a family of five siblings from were assigned to the dolphin named Cathy. We had two dolphin trainers with us who seemed to have built a strong relationship with Cathy. Cathy also was obviously very well-trained.
After getting into the water the trainers separated me from the siblings so I can get pictures taken with Cathy. They had Cathy do a variety of tricks with me. She came above the water and danced as I held on to her flippers. I also gave her a hug and a kiss and she kissed me on the cheek as well. I held out my hand and she pressed her nose against my palm and spun me around in the water. She also gave me a quick ride across the water as I held on to her flippers. It was so much fun!
After swimming, we gathered near the shallow area and got a quick show of the dolphins jumping in unison. After that, we exited the water and turned in our wetsuits. I went to their boutique to look over the pictures that were taken. Since I wasn’t allowed to bring anything into the water I couldn’t use my GoPro. So they had photographers take pictures during the experience that you can purchase.
I was a bit disappointed because I didn’t remember seeing it on their website that we wouldn’t be able to bring anything into the water with us. Nor did I see anything about pictures having to be purchased separately. The pictures were quite expensive, but I ended up getting them. Those will be displayed in my next post!
Overall this was an amazing experience and well worth the investment. I was so thrilled that I got to interact with these amazing animals and cross it off my bucket list. I hope you enjoyed this post! What are you going to cross off your bucket list this year? Leave a comment below and tell me about it. Also, don’t forget to share this post if you liked it.
