Helping Veterans Through Archaeology with Stephen Humphreys

By now some of you might have heard of Operation: Dual Trek. An upcoming expedition that I’ll be doing in South America. Where I plan to walk 1,000 miles across both Paraguay and Uruguay in order to raise money for the non-profit organization, American Veterans Archaeological Recovery (AVAR). Today on the podcast I talk with AVAR’s founder and CEO, Stephen Humphreys, to discuss AVAR’s mission, and how Veterans can benefit from conducting archaeological fieldwork.

Prior to embarking on the path of archaeology, Stephen spent time in the Air Force as a young officer and led troops on deployments. He also spent time as an instructor based in Texas. Following his military career, he began to pursue academia to study archaeology. Eventually finding his way to Durham University in England, where he’s about to earn his PhD.

Throughout his tenure as an archaeologist, Stephen has been able to travel to several amazing places around the world to conduct fieldwork. Including; Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea, Israel, the US, among others. Now he takes other Veterans around the world so they can experience archaeology and adventure.

In this episode, Stephen shares more of his story, and he tells about the founding of AVAR and it’s mission. We also discuss how Veterans can benefit from doing archaeological fieldwork. As well as the fundraising efforts that I’m taking on this year with Operation: Dual Trek!
