A Scary Tale From My Home

Halloween is my favorite holiday! And it’s just right around the corner! So for this post, I had to write up something spooky! Now it’s going to be a little bit different from my other posts. As I won’t be writing about a trip I took or anything like that. Instead, I’ll be sharing with you all a scary story from when I was younger and living in my home state of Michigan.

I’ve heard many ghost stories from places that I’ve traveled to, and I’ll certainly share those down the road. However, the story that I’m about to share with you all is a personal one, and it’s true. It’s a story that I’ve told very few people throughout my life. For what I experienced on this particular night many years ago, still leaves me to believe that there might be a monster lurking in the woods near my childhood home. So with that, I hope you all enjoy the story!

The Full Moon and the Winter Cold

I was a sophomore in high school, so about 15 or 16 years old at the time. It was winter, and I had invited two of my friends over to my house to stay the night. We ended up spending most of the time inside playing video games. However, eventually, we found ourselves heading out for what would become a scary nighttime adventure!

A little over a mile away from my house stands a tall communications tower. And I had the brilliant idea of having myself and my two friends sneak out of the house in the middle of the night and going to the tower. Around this time in my life, I’d formed an interest in joining the military. So I thought it would be fun to do a “night raid” on the tower! My two friends thought it would be fun too. So when the time came, we donned our cold-weather gear, escaped the house, and proceeded to our objective.

The first phase of our mission was crossing an open field. The snow had fallen heavily the night before. Making it so dense that we were able to walk on it without breaking through. I also remember how bright the full moon was that night. Creating an almost daytime appearance that didn’t require the use of our flashlights.

Things seemed to be going well for us as we made our way across the field. We could see the tower over the trees in the distance. However, things quickly changed once we made it to the other side of the field and hit the treeline. The woods in front of us looked very formidable, and the treeline was so thick that we weren’t able to find a good way through. At this point, the cold was starting to get to us too. So what started out as a cool idea, quickly became a lot less fun. So we came to a mutual agreement to turn back.

And here’s where things start to get scary. While retracing our steps back across the field, we saw a set of footprints in the snow that ran perpendicular to ours. Footprints that weren’t there before. After taking a closer look, we noticed something very unusual about them. Something that chilled us to the bone, more than the winter cold around us.

The footprints resembled those of a human, except they were much larger and the toes were pointed. As if whatever made them had sharp claws that dug into the snow. The spacing of the footprints led us to believe that it was something that walked on two legs. It also must’ve been heavy and/or running, because each footprint went deep into the densely packed snow. After taking all of these things into account, and the fact that the full moon was lighting up the night sky. There was only one creature that came into my mind that I thought could’ve done this…

A werewolf.

We looked at where the footprints led. They went to another patch of woods that ran alongside the field. We’d hoped that whatever it was, that it was well away from us by now. We hastily made our way back across the field to where we started. I would occasionally look back behind me to make sure that we weren’t being followed. Though I was afraid to do so because I thought I’d see a ferocious beast running us down. Thankfully, that didn’t happen. And we safely made it back to my house.

After high school, I lost touch with my two friends. And for years I’d forgotten about what we saw that night. It wasn’t until about a few years ago when I came across the legend of a cryptozoological creature known as the Michigan Dogman. An upright canine creature allegedly first sighted in Wexford County, Michigan back in 1887. And throughout the 20th century, more sightings were said to have occurred. This legend is covered in greater detail in an article published by the Huffington Post a few years ago. You can check that out here.

So I wonder… was this the creature that made those footprints? I may never know for sure. Though even now after all these years. Whenever I visit my childhood home and I look out at those woods. I can’t help but wonder if a monster still might be lurking among the trees. Watching… waiting…

It’s a scary thought.
